I caught my first fish at 6 yrs old off the beach of Atlantic City at the Jersey Shore. I was hooked! Grew up fishing the bays of Jersey as well as rivers and lakes but never trout fished. I moved to Portland in the summer of 78 to start my surgical residency and when time permitted (which was not often I learned to gear fish for steelhead and salmon and started catching trout in lakes and streams using bait/spinners.
After finishing my training in 1985, I decided I had to learn fly fishing because it looked so cool and elegant. I signed up for a 3 day class on the Deschutes, bought a 5/6 wt. rod and reel from LL Bean and I was off and running. It was during the stonefly hatch and I caught several beautiful Redsides on nymphs and on the last day, I caught a couple on dries . I don’t think I have missed fishing that hatch since. For me seeing a big rainbow take a Norm Woods or Chubby is just one of life’s greatest joys.
I have since expanded my horizons and became an avid steel header but have also caught browns, cutties, coho and carp on flies. I love salt water fishing as well. I have traveled to Cuba, Mexico,Belize and the Florida Keys in pursuit of Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, and Snook on the fly. I love backpacking into mountain lakes in pursuit of different trout species.
Flyfishing is my passion and I hope and pray that we protect our waters so the generations that follow can continue to catch these wonderful fish on the fly.
